It all begins with a small change. A choice that YOU must make and no one else can do it for you.
About a year and a half ago, a couple of friends convinced me to go hiking in Claremont hills for first time. I am not a morning person, mind you, but I woke up at 6:30am, dragged myself out of bed, and hopped in the shower hoping some cold water would wake me up. When I finally got to the trail, I was surprised to see so many people coming and going. I lived in the area since I was 14 and I never once realized the popularity of this type of activity. At the time, it just didn’t seem plausible for me to wake up and say “Hey, I am going to go climb a mountain today!”
But, up the mountain I went. It was intense. It was long. It was 5.5 miles and longer than I had ever consciously walked in my life. My calf muscles, quads, and hamstrings were burning. My heart was working at max capacity. I had never in my life exercised my muscles this way before. Not even close. In that moment, I realized how unhealthy my sedentary lifestyle really was and I vowed to change it. I felt really proud of myself for completing the trail that day. Even though I couldn’t move for the next couple of days, I have never regretted it! In fact, I have been hiking at least once a week since that day. Now, I can honestly say that I do enjoy climbing a mountain every weekend, especially in good company.
So, now what? I had a goal and I met it, slowly but surely. It was time for a new goal. Motivated by my little sister, who also changed her life around for the better, I signed up for the Disneyland Half Marathon. As I trained for the race, I obtained a new found love for health, nutrition, and fitness. I joined a local yoga studio to supplement my running by taking both yoga and Pilates classes. All these changes made a difference in my physical and mental health. I became more mindful of my eating, breathing, and actions. This was the result:
It was a long and strenuous journey. I could not have done it without the support of family, friends, and countless of motivational blogs. My new goal is to help others find their way.
This is my journey. Now, it’s YOUR TURN.
